Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58
When I read this verse earlier this week, I immediately thought of this verse also written by the Apostle Paul:
"I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:14
And this verse: "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it." 1 Corinthians 9:24
All 3 are spiritually motivating verses that share a similar emphasis. Yet, there seems to be a contradiction. At least that was my initial reaction when those other verses came to mind. Our feature verse today implies "staying" while the other 2 speak to "movement". In fact, 1 Corinthians 15:58 uses the word "immovable". So how does one stay and move at the same time?
But then it hit me. It is not a matter of staying in place vs. moving. In reality, Scripture and experience teaches us that life is truly a journey. From the moment we are conceived, we are continually moving, growing, changing in all facets of our being. Nothing is ever the same, as much it may seem that way at times in our life. The key is the course and the direction in which we move. It is that course and that direction that keeps us moving towards God and with God where we must remain steadfast and immovable. We can't allow ourselves to be pushed onto another path or turned in another direction. If we stay the course, we will be "abounding in the work of the Lord."
Sounds simple enough. Until, we don't feel like we are "abounding". That's when we can fall prey to the creep of worldly wisdom into our lives. Before long, we find ourselves on a different path heading in the wrong direction. Its true for us as individuals and it is true for us as churches, ministries and mission organizations.
So how do we prevent this and how do we get ourselves turned around? The "Sunday School answers". Being grounded in God's Word, diligent in prayer, active in the fellowship of believers, surrendered to the work of The Holy Spirit, etc. Experts, Christian and non, have their place until their advice runs contrary to the Word of God and the Will of God.
In terms of churches and Christian organizations, I have always said that using business principles to manage your organization has value. But, let's be honest. It won't be long until God's Word and God's Will run counter to what "good business sense" would dictate. Also, the measure of success is different. Our purpose is not of this world and neither are the fruits of our labor.
So, what's my point? If you are feeling down because the metrics aren't looking good, go to God through His Word and Prayer to evaluate and submit your earthly advice to the same. This will keep you moving forward while remaining steadfast and immovable so that you may abound in His good works.
Obviously, this advice speaks directly to pastors and ministry leaders and your organizations but, it is applicable to our individual journey as well.
Press on, run the race in a steadfast and immovable way!
Have a great day in the Lord!
